New Collection of Short Stories
Introducing the next published collection of short stories! This is an eight-story book full of adventurous tales with pirates, mermaids, dragons, angels, and mysterious “cotton candy monsters.” Included are six Creative Writing pieces and two Non-Fiction stories about the author.
Summerized Introduction (As Seen in the Book)
Short stories are a great way to practice when one wants to become an author. So, here you’ll see my former attempts in finding “my voice.”
I started this collection in High School; it was much longer than it is now. I shared many stories with teachers who encouraged me to create in the first place. I attended a small, private High School where students were genuinely cared for and teachers became friends.
Origin of the Short StoriesĀ
One day, while in a free period, I was having a conversation with two teachers. Normally, we’d discuss movies, but today my writing came up. Somehow, the challenge of creating a piece that was actually “scary” was on the table. I believe we had been discussing Lovecraft’s short stories.
I went home and spent maybe one or two hours creating a short, four-page story of a kidnapping. I was anxious to share my story, but that didn’t stop me from printing it and giving both my teachers a copy. After having read through the tale, they both agreed they weren’t frightened, but they were very impressed.
One teacher, Kyle Spencer, in particular, was thrilled to have received the copy, and I ended my time in High School having given him four short stories and an entire play for his leisurely reading. His encouragement has not gone unappreciated.
That first short story is not included in this collection. Nor will it ever be. It will remain an attempt that I will cherish for its amateurish delight.
Attributes
“Come Along Now,” “A Bright Light,” and “Angel of My Eye” were all given to this teacher. “Bragi” was a creative piece I wrote in a January term about witchcraft (we were studying Norse mythology at the time). “High School” was an allegory I wrote and delivered as a senior speech to my entire High School (students, faculty, staff, and parents) a month before graduation. “Cotton Candy Monsters,” I wrote in my first Creative Writing class in College, at DePaul University.
Lastly, “Before Hobbies” and “Before Bedtime” are attempts at my first Non-Fiction stories created in the first Creative Writing class I’ve taken at Illinois State University. Although to me, these pieces show an unsure author, they also mark different chapters in my life as a growing creative writer, and for that, I cherish their imperfections.
